Background of the Study
Traditional marriage customs have long been a cornerstone of cultural identity in Uyo Local Government, Akwa Ibom State. However, increasing Western influence has introduced new perspectives and practices in matrimonial ceremonies, challenging the continuity of indigenous customs (Ekong, 2023). The juxtaposition of traditional rituals with modern, Westernized practices has created a dynamic cultural landscape where old and new intersect. Research indicates that while some community members embrace these changes as a sign of progress and modernization, others are concerned about the erosion of time-honored traditions (Udoh, 2024). This evolution in marriage practices reflects broader socio-cultural transformations and raises questions about the future of indigenous customs. The study seeks to explore how Western influence is reshaping traditional marriage customs and what implications this has for cultural continuity (Ejem, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
There is a growing concern that Western influence is diluting traditional marriage customs in Uyo. The hybridization of matrimonial practices has led to tensions between modern ideals and cultural preservation. This shift raises questions about the authenticity of traditional ceremonies and the potential loss of indigenous cultural values. The lack of comprehensive research on these changes presents a gap in understanding the full implications for cultural identity and social cohesion in matrimonial contexts (Okon, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  • To assess the influence of Western practices on traditional marriage customs.
  • To identify changes in matrimonial ceremonies due to Western influence.
  • To recommend strategies for preserving traditional marriage customs.

Research Questions:

  • How has Western influence altered traditional marriage customs in Uyo?
  • What are the primary changes observed in matrimonial practices?
  • What measures can be taken to preserve indigenous marriage traditions?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H₁: Western influence has significantly altered traditional marriage practices in Uyo.
  • H₂: There is a negative relationship between the adoption of Western customs and the preservation of traditional marriage rites.
  • H₃: Cultural preservation programs positively affect the retention of traditional marriage customs.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores the tension between modernity and tradition in matrimonial practices. Its findings will help cultural custodians and policymakers balance Western influences with the preservation of indigenous marriage customs in Uyo (Ifeanyi, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to assessing traditional marriage customs in Uyo Local Government, Akwa Ibom State in the context of Western influence, excluding other social institutions.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Traditional Marriage Customs: Culturally specific rites and ceremonies associated with marriage.
  • Western Influence: The adoption of practices and ideas originating from Western cultures.
  • Cultural Preservation: The effort to maintain and safeguard traditional cultural practices.
